Arbroath's synth-pop band, Synthetic Dreams, usually get a thumbs up for their shows, but it seems they had a bit of an off night for this particular Tayside Bar performance.

Tayside Bar trivia...
As well as putting on live bands, the Tayside Bar also helped acts out by selling tickets and fanzines in the pub along with any recorded product they had.
This example here is for a cassette by local outfit, Waiter Waiter, which was available to purchase from Dundee record shops...and the pub!
The advert was published in Cranked Up in March '82.

March 1982 - ST. ANDREW & THE WOOLLEN MILL
Cranked Up's scathing review of Dundee comedy band, St. Andrew & The Woollen Mill, was actually a joke...one which was requested by the band.
When at the Tayside Bar gig, the band asked Cranked Up to give them a really bad review, just for kicks, so it was written there & then on the spot, and the band gave the phoney review a thumbs up!

March 1982 - MAFIA
This is another rather amusing review which appeared on the same page as the previous St Andrew & The Woollen Mill review.
It's for Dundee band, Mafia, an act that had been playing together for many years, as the review will remind you.
The write-up presented with a wee touch of satire!

25 April 1982 - HEY! ELASTICA
This gig by Hey! Elastica was hyped up a bit in advance and so there were a few VIP's in the crowd, including members of Simple Minds. The band (from Edinburgh) made upbeat dancey pop grooves and were tipped for chart success. The gig guide is from an Edinburgh publication called The Rag. Cranked Up were also present in the crowd but the gig got a big thumbs down in the review. |
April 1982 - LITTLE WOLVES
Brechin band, Little Wolves, played standard rock style tunes but they didn't go down very well with at least one member of the Tayside Bar's alternative audience.
This was also the very last gig review in the very last issue of Cranked Up.

Tayside Bar trivia...
There were bands who played at the Tayside Bar, namely - 30 Bob Suits, Doppelganger and Private ID - who were 3 of the very few acts chosen to appear on a short-lived TV series in 1982-83 called "Street Buzz".
The point of the series was to showcase unknown Scottish bands.

9 December 1982 - LIFE SUPPORT
Here's St Andrews band, Life Support, entertaining the Tayside Bar crowd one cold December evening - brrrr!
Singer Al and one of the backing singers (Hilary) were 2 of the main contributors to Deadbeat fanzine.
Al at gig... "Thanks to Brian for inviting us back and for the three of you for turning up - I hope you don't mind but I'm going to introduce the band in case anyone's running late - on backing vocals Hilary and Susan, on bass Si Clone, on guitar Rip van Reihill and on drums our driver Dave! OK this one's called 'The Penny Drops'..."
And again..."Is there anyone out there called Priscilla- this ones called 'Sweet Jane'..."

Tayside Bar trivia...
One time when Billy MacKenzie was in the Tayside Bar, this girl came over to ask him if it would be OK to do a zodiac horoscope reading kind of thing.
He said OK.
She asked him what sign he was and he replied "Taurus".
"I thought so" she said, then going on to explain that being "a strong leader" and "very creative" etc, were typical qualities of Taurus.
After her 5 minute stint was over, Billy then dropped the bombshell - "Well actually, I'm an Aries".
Let's just say she wasn't too pleased!!

This was the gig where the singer made a synchronised dramatic leap at the start of one of the bands songs for visual effect, only to end up thumping his head on the ceiling.
He had no option but to soldier on!
